Craig Jones 1985-2008
Eurosport - Mon, 04 Aug 11:09:00 2008
British World Supersport rider Craig Jones has died in hospital following his crash at Brands Hatch on Sunday.
2008 World Supersport Craig Jones - 0
Parkalgar Honda rider Jones suffered head injuries at the Kent circuit when, chasing leader Jonathan Rea on lap seven of a restarted race, he slid out at Clark Curve and was left exposed on the track. Rea's Ten Cate Honda team-mate Andrew Pitt, following closely behind, made slight contact with him as he passed.
The race was stopped as Jones, 23, was attended to on the track. He was resuscitated four times before being flown by Air Ambulance to Royal London hospital, where he was placed in a pharmacological coma by doctors.
Their attempts to stabilise his condition were in vain and he died in the early hours of Monday morning.
The order at the conclusion of the previous lap decided the official result, with Jones therefore awarded second.
Peterborough-based Jones entered the public eye in 2002 when he won the British Junior Superstock Championship for Roundstone Suzuki. He then moved to the British Supersport Championship with team Triumph Valmoto, where he spent two seasons. He clinched his maiden victory in the class in the final running of the Daytona 600.
He joined Northpoint Honda in 2005 and finished second in the BSS championship while making his World Supersport debut as a wildcard in Britain and for Ten Kate Honda at Brno.
For 2006 he made the bold move into World Superbikes with outfit Foggy Petronas, but failed to compete as he ended the season in 27th.
However after dropping into World Supersport with Reve Ekerold Honda last year, he again showed why he was so highly rated with three podiums, one pole and a final position of fifth overall.
In 2008 he joined Parkalgar Honda and achieved four podium finishes before Sunday's fatal accident.
Jonathan Palmer, chief executive of Brands Hatch owners Motorsport Vision said:
"I am so desperately sad that Craig died from the injuries he sustained at Brands Hatch yesterday.
"He was a really super young guy and only on the Saturday evening was I chatting to him in the paddock with him telling me about his World Superbike ambitions for 2009.
"Craig was so determined and professional, would always say hello and enthusiastically keep me in touch with his progress.
"Britain has lost a wonderful rider whom I admired enormously and had every chance of being a future world champion.
"It is fitting that the abiding memory so many of us will have of Craig was him riding brilliantly, battling for the lead of an incredible race, in front of his home crowd.
"It seems barely believable that such a freak accident claimed his life and I extend my deepest sympathies to his family and friends."

Biography
Born in Northwich, Cheshire, Jones was a successful racer in the lower ranks of the British motorcycling ladder winning the 1996 British Junior Mini-Moto Championship, the 1997 British Senior Mini-Moto Championship and the 2002 British Junior Superstock Championship before moving up to the British Supersport Championship.
In 2002 Jones rode in trials at the Isle of Man TT Races for the Triumph Motorcycles/[[Valmoto team on a Daytona 600. Jones subsequently stayed with this team to compete in the 2003 and 2004 seasons of the British Supersport Championship, with Jones taking the team's only win in its final race, at Donington Park.[1] Jones finished the 2004 season eighth in the overall standings.
In 2005 Jones has his best year in the British Supersport Championship riding for the Northpoint Honda team, achieving seven podium finishes and second overall in the title contest behind Leon Camier. Jones' riding that year earned him wildcard entry into the two British rounds of World Supersport, where he performed impressively. Jones qualified on the front row at Silverstone and was contesting the lead when he pulled out of the race with clutch problems, and he finished eighth at Brands Hatch. Jones was also called up as a stand-in rider for the prestigious Ten Kate Honda team at Brno, where he finished sixth.
Jones moved up to the Superbike World Championship for the 2006 season on the uncompetitive Foggy Petronas FP1. A solitary thirteenth place at Imola was his only points finish in the championship.
In 2007, Jones returned to the Supersport World Championship category for his first season as a full-time supersport rider, riding with the Reve Ekerold Honda team. Jones performed impressively and finished fifth overall in the championship with three podiums at Brno, Vallelunga and Magny-Cours.
For 2008, Jones remained in Supersport and had added three more podiums and was sixth in the championship before his ultimately tragic home round at Brands Hatch.
[edit] Death
Jones died as a result of head injuries sustained as the result of a fall and subsequent collision during the Supersport Race at the Brands Hatch round of the 2008 World Supersport Championship.
The fall occurred at Clark Curve, a fast right-hand turn that leads into the home straight of the Brands Hatch circuit. At the time of the fall, Jones was in second position and challenging Jonathan Rea for the lead. As Jones accelerated out of the curve the rear wheel of his Honda CBR-600RR machine lost traction and he was thrown across the track into the path of oncoming riders. The Australian rider Andrew Pitt attempted to take evasive action, but the front wheel of his machine collided with Jones' head, resulting in an ultimately fatal head injury. [2]
The race was immediately stopped by officials so that medical personnel could attend to Jones, and he was taken to the Brands Hatch medical centre where Clinica Mobile doctors resuscitated him on four occasions. He was subsequently air-lifted by the Kent Air Ambulance to the Royal London Hospital. Jones' condition was assessed as 'extremely critical' upon his arrival and he was induced into a pharmacological coma by doctors in an attempt to stabilise his condition. This intervention was unsuccessful and Jones was pronounced dead by doctors shortly after 00.30 local time on August 4, 2008.[3][4] As Jones was running second in the race at the time of the race stoppage, he moved up to fifth in the championship. [5]
Four-time world champion and former team boss of Jones, Carl Fogarty said that "Craig was one of a crop of good young riders who were the future of British racing and I took a chance on him to ride for our team in 2006 because I thought he was the pick of the bunch.
